PS: The Rookery Cove has moved here and the starter pack has changed some. It’s still not to be missed! Read also here!

A lot has changed since avatars were born naked into this virtual world. Now, when you first log on you wear at least a basic outfit although every fashion conscious avatar is anxious to get rid of it as soon as possible.
The same can be said for the basic shape, skin, eyes, and hair. Still, your basic shape is modifiable so you could tweak and fine-tune yourself to a more dashing appearance or you could go someplace where they give away complete starter kits for free.
One of the best spots to turn yourself into a handsome, 7 foot 4 tall, 20-something avatar would be The Rookery Cove Project.

Join their group and get two gifts containing hair, sneakers, jeans, 2 shirts, 2 skins (with or without chin beard), a walk AO and a shape (although I wear my own shape on the picture).
The shoes lack a shoebase so you should copy one from your library folder. They are in the sub-folder clothing where you will also find some more starter packs for your avatar you might want to try out.
Caledonian Gentlemen
If you like a somewhat different look you should go to the University of Caledon Oxbridge. Feodora Umarov was so nice to tell me about this location, thanks again!
Here you can get 6 complete Victorian/Goth Avatars (including one Furry) as well as 2 Male Tinies and a Steampunk Robot (which I don’t show here; btw: there are lots of nice starter packs for the ladies around, too).
All of these were designed by well-known SL creators and are being offered to you free of charge. Don’t forget to also pick up the Gentleman Jim AO while you are there.

Sir, I am glad your visit to Caledon was enervating and prosperous – we are indeed excited and gratified to see so many citizens from elsewhere on the grid visit our nation, especially as this week sees our third anniversary celebrations.
I feel I should warn your readers, however, that acquisition of the University freebies has had to be restricted to new accounts (30 days or less) in order to maintain the smooth running of the establishment.
On a purely personal note, the first hair I acquired, for free, upon leaving my newbie AV behind was that illustrated in your Rookery Cove image. I wore it unswervingly, until seeing it on OnRez (for L$50) where a review claimed the free/cheap versions were unauthorised copies of a Japanese creator’s work – alas, I cannot remember his name. Careful investigation allowed me to track him down, whereupon I did indeed find the exact same hair for sale at a premium in his shop and bought several versions. This particular style is so widespread now in freebie stores, starter packs and gift boxes that I hardly know whether to believe it really can be a blatant case of theft or whether someone independently produced something similar – I am quite, quite sure that the no doubt blameless people at Rookery Cove are unaware there is a question mark over it. Nevertheless, readers should be aware of the situation.
I remain your humble servant,
Random Merryman

Hi,
too bad you had to restrict these nice avatars. I’m sure everyone not getting them in time will be frustrated by this decision.
Regarding the hair, Rookery Cove is the only provider I know addding a note with this hair:
“A New Beginning” Starter Pack Male, Notecard (quote):
The hair ( -=H2L=- Shun UmberBlack ) in this Male Starter Pack is included with the permission of the creator Hayate Ewing.
Hayate Hair Lab: -=H2L=- Hayate’s Hair Lab., Harajuku (117, 90, 22)
(unquote)
I hope, I addressed all your concerns. For further inquiries please contact Rookery Cove directly since I am in no way connected with them.
Wishing you continued good luck with your project!
